Anabolic Resistance Explained
Anabolic resistance describes a reduced muscle protein-synthesis response to anabolic stimuli such as dietary protein or amino acids.
What researchers observe
A 2026 systematic review and meta-analysis reported modest reductions in post-absorptive and post-meal muscle protein synthesis in older compared with younger adults. The literature remains heterogeneous, so this is not a simple on/off condition.
Exercise changes the picture
The same 2026 review found that many post-exercise comparisons did not show a significant age-related difference, suggesting older muscle retains meaningful anabolic potential when an appropriate exercise stimulus is present.
What can worsen it
Physical inactivity, metabolic disease, inflammation and inadequate nutrition can interact with aging and may amplify anabolic resistance.
Practical implication
The concept supports combining adequate high-quality protein with regular resistance exercise rather than relying on a supplement alone.
