BCAAs Explained
BCAA supplements became popular because leucine has an important role in muscle-protein signaling, but the three BCAAs are only part of the larger protein-synthesis picture.
The three BCAAs
Leucine, isoleucine and valine are essential amino acids with branched chemical structures.
Why leucine gets attention
Leucine is strongly associated with mTOR-related signaling involved in muscle protein synthesis. Signaling alone is not the same as supplying all substrates needed to build complete muscle proteins.
BCAA vs complete protein
Complete proteins provide all essential amino acids, while a BCAA supplement provides only three. If someone already eats enough high-quality protein, extra BCAAs may add little.
Who should compare EAAs instead
People shopping specifically for an amino-acid supplement for muscle should understand the EAA category before assuming BCAAs are the default choice.
