Essential vs Nonessential Amino Acids

“Essential” does not mean more important. It means the body cannot make enough of that amino acid and therefore requires it from the diet.

Essential amino acids

Adults commonly recognize nine: histidine, isoleucine, leucine, lysine, methionine, phenylalanine, threonine, tryptophan and valine.

Nonessential amino acids

These can generally be synthesized by the human body from other compounds, so a healthy person does not require a dedicated dietary source of each one.

Conditionally essential amino acids

Illness, injury, development or other physiological stresses can change amino-acid requirements. This is one reason clinical nutrition should not be reduced to supplement marketing.

Why this matters when shopping

A BCAA product contains essential amino acids but is not a complete EAA mixture. Likewise, a branded amino formula may use a custom set that differs from the standard nine-EAA classification.
